If you've never heard of purple gromwell, you're not alone — but if you've struggled with hormonal acne, congested skin, or dark marks that just won't fade, this root might be the missing piece you didn't know you were looking for.

Purple gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries to support irritated, blemish-prone skin. Its deep red-purple color comes from a naturally occurring compound called shikonin — and shikonin isn't just folklore. Published dermatology research has found that gromwell root extract can help calm inflammation and protect skin from oxidative stress, which is exactly why it's the foundation of our Break Free acne face bar.

Why Purple Gromwell Works for Acne

At the heart of Break Free is purple gromwell infused olive oil — a deep, red-purple liquid that takes three full months to infuse before it's ready to use. That color isn't just for show. It comes from shikonin, the same compound researchers have studied for its natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects on skin.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, purple gromwell root has long been used to support skin affected by:

  • Hormonal and cystic acne
  • Redness and inflammation
  • Congested, oily skin
  • Old breakouts that leave behind dark marks

The Herbal Trio: Purple Gromwell, Honeysuckle & Licorice Root

Purple gromwell is powerful on its own, but Break Free doesn't stop there. We added two more TCM herbs to round out the formula:

  • Honeysuckle — traditionally valued for calming redness and purifying the skin
  • Licorice root — known for helping fade dark marks and even out tone, rather than just masking them
  • Kaolin clay — added to pull out excess oil and lift impurities from congested skin

Together, these ingredients are designed to do more than cleanse — they're meant to actively support skin that's dealing with active breakouts and the marks they leave behind.

Purple, Then Green, Then Beige: The Color Surprise Nobody Expects

Here's the part that surprised even us. Given how vivid the purple gromwell oil is on its own, we expected the finished bar to come out purple too. Instead, the moment the herbal decoctions and kaolin clay are added, the bar turns green.

It doesn't stop there. As the bar cures over the next one to two months, it slowly shifts again — settling into a soft, natural beige by the time it's ready to use.

From start to finish, Break Free goes through:

  1. Three months infusing purple gromwell root in olive oil
  2. One batch day combining the herbal decoctions, honeysuckle, licorice root, and kaolin clay (the green stage)
  3. One to two months curing, until the bar settles into beige

That's nearly five months of process behind a single bar — all done by hand, in small batches.

Real Results: Day 1 to Day 5

This is the only facial product currently in rotation on our own skin, and the change from day 1 to day 5 speaks for itself — from angry, congested breakouts to visibly calmer skin in under a week.

Why Handmade, Small-Batch Skincare Takes This Long

Mass-produced cleansers can be made in hours. Break Free takes closer to five months, start to finish, because real herbal infusion isn't something you can rush. Every bar is handcrafted in small batches, which is part of why a bar like this costs more than a drugstore cleanser — but it's also why it's formulated to do more than just clean your skin.
